National audienceVoluntary work, defined as a voluntary and unpaid donation of work, can take two forms: in civil organisations (formal or organised civil voluntary work) or in neighbourhood networks, among neighbours, friends or family (informal voluntary work). Knowledge of voluntary work in France has long been approximative and fragmented and more often than not limited to formal voluntary work. INSEE's 1985-1986 Emploi du Temps survey provided an opportunity to outline the different practices and clarify some of their determining factors. Organised civil voluntary work seems to be found mainly in sports and cultural activities, contrary to its usual social and charitable image. It is more of a male domain and increases with the level of education and the intensity of other sociable practices. It is found less in large towns and more frequently in rural areas and small towns, probably offsetting the low level of public and market resources allotted to the targeted activities. The informal donation of time, which also increases with other sociable practices, differs considerably from formal voluntary work from the point of view of other characteristics. It covers a wider range of activities, involves more women and is more rooted in an everyday sociability, which is a vehicle for exchanges between generations.Le bénévolat, défini comme un don de temps volontaire et non rémunéré, peut s'exercer de deux façons : au sein d'organisations associatives - il constitue alors le bénévolat formel ou associatif - ou dans des réseaux de proximité, entre voisins, amis ou parents - c'est le bénévolat informel. En France, la connaissance du bénévolat est restée longtemps approximative et parcellaire, le plus souvent limitée au bénévolat formel. L'enquête Emploi du temps conduite par l'Insee en 1985-1986 offre l'occasion de tracer les contours des différentes pratiques et d'en éclairer certains déterminants. Le bénévolat associatif apparaît principalement sportif et culturel, assez éloigné de son image emblématique qui lui verrait plutôt une orientation sociale et caritative. Sa pratique est plutôt le fait des hommes ; elle s'élève avec le niveau de diplôme et avec l'intensité des autres pratiques de sociabilité ; elle est plus fréquente en milieu rural et dans les petites villes que dans les grandes, palliant sans doute la faiblesse des moyens, publics et marchands, dévolus aux activités visées. Le don de temps informel, qui se développe aussi avec les autres pratiques de sociabilité, se différencie nettement du bénévolat formel pour d'autres caractéristiques. Plus généralisé, plus féminin aussi, il s'inscrit davantage dans une sociabilité au quotidien qui fait sa part aux échanges intergénérationnels
